Description

Mother Boniface Spirituality Center, Philadelphia, PA

October 13-16, 2017

Friday - Monday: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

This Bible-based trauma healing training uses the book Healing the Wounds of Trauma: How the Church Can Help and its associated program model, a proven approach using applied Scripture and best mental health principles to address spiritual and emotional wounds caused by the trauma of war, ethnic conflicts, natural disasters, car accidents, abuse, and similar events. The book has been translated and taught in over 100 countries with more than 195 language groups in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas.

In the initial equipping session, participants learn basic biblical and mental health principles related to trauma care; explore if they themselves are carrying any wounds of trauma or loss and bring those to Christ for healing; learn how to lead groups in a participatory way; learn the program model; and develop plans for using what they have learned in their community. Participants who have the necessary competencies are certified as apprentice facilitators at the end of the initial session. This session is intended for people who would like to explore becoming a trauma healing facilitator so that they can provide basic care for those wounded by trauma and loss, or (optionally) train others to do so. Mental health professionals can benefit from this practical approach that is effective with groups cross-culturally. This session is appropriate for caregivers who will work in the USA or internationally.

The advanced equipping session hones the skills of those who have already attended an initial session and completed their practicum (leading at least two healing groups). By the end of this session, trainees should be better able to solve program issues arising in trauma healing as they carry out their ministries. They should understand the materials completely and clearly and be able to teach in a participatory way. Participants who have the necessary competencies are certified as training facilitators or healing group facilitators at the end of the advanced session.

Necessary qualifications:

  • Fluent in English
  • Able to attend all of the sessions (certificates will only be granted to those who do so)
  • At least 18 years old
  • Committed to help trauma survivors and able to dedicate ~2 weeks per year to trauma healing
  • Able to teach others, manage own wellbeing, work on a team, and learn to lead groups in a participatory way
  • Advanced participants: have attended initial equipping, led at least two healing groups, and submitted reports to Trauma Healing Institute (traumahealing@americanbible.org)
